• Animals News 28.08.2021 Comments Off on Birds And Their Symbiotic Relationships With Animals

    Throughout history, certain species of birds have formed strategic partnerships with other animals. And these partnerships have seeming served both of them well. Here are just a few of those pairings.

    One of these strange relationships is the one that wild pigs have with robins in Europe. Wild pigs are known for their digging ability. So much so, that many people refer to them as digging machines. And what they are digging for is root foods which they live on. They also feed on grubs and small worms that they find in the soil.

    Over the years, the robin has noticed that whenever these wild pigs appear and start to dig up the ground, they are also digging up and exposing worms. As a result, robins have learned to stay close to these pigs as they begin to dig so they can scoop up the worms that appear on the surface.

    In a like manner, the Nightjar has an interesting symbiotic relationship with wild cattle and goats in areas where the both live. For the most part, nightjars are birds of the night. Their primary diet consists of moths and beetles. The bird is a great aerial hunter and, even in mid flight, is capable of deftly snatching moths from the air. However, when it is on the ground, it is typically hunting ants and beetles.

    During the passing of many hundreds of years, the nightjar has come to notice that when wild cattle and goats are grazing nearby, that their continuous moving around agitates the ground on which they are grazing. And as they do this, all of the activity causes insects to come above ground. So insects such as beetles and moths, are all of a sudden on the surface making them easy pickings for predators. As a result, the nightjar has learned that its often easier to follow the herds and feed off of the insects that they dig up than it is to hunt and scrounge for their own meals.

    The oxpecker bird is yet another illustration of birds forming symbiotic relationships. The oxpecker is a close relation to the starling. And within Africa, this bird has a real working partnership with many animals – antelope, buffalo, rhinoceros, and even the giraffe. The relationship has to do with the fact that ticks and lice are very common in this environment.

    They are a nuisance to these large animals because their eggs hatch on the animal’s surface and immediately becomes a parasite by gorging on their blood. If an animal gets enough of these on its skin, it can find its strength and staminal slowly being drained away.

    Oxpeckers love these parasites because they contain lots of blood which has a ton of nourishments. They comb through the skin and hairs of these large animals and consume all of the ticks and lice that they find. A win/win for everyone.

  • Cat & Dog 27.08.2021 Comments Off on Is A Fibromyalgia Service Dog For You

    There have been numerous studies carried out that shows dogs and animals in general help alleviate stress and anxiety and lower blood pressure of hospitalized chronically ill patients. But what can a fibromyalgia service dog for you and are they a suitable addition to your life?

    First of all having any pet requires commitment on behalf of the owner. Dogs can live for 10 15 years and they need to be feed, groomed, exercised and loved. Youll also need to ensure that your garden, if you have one, is fully fenced and dangerous household items are placed out of dog-reach.

    Service dogs for fibromyalgia sufferers is not uncommon, however you will need to be legally recognized as having a disability under the ADA of 1990 (Americans with Disabilities Act) before you can apply for one.

    If you already have the necessary disability paperwork youll need to fill in forms at your chosen service dog center and be prepared for a long wait, there can be long waiting lists. It can also be an expensive procedure so ensure you understand what costs are involved.

    There may be the possibility of disability insurance covering all or some of the costs involved, so it pays to do some investigation into this first.

    Think about too, what you need your service dog for. Retrievers are common service dogs as they take well to training and can do things like retrieve items, help with household tasks, open doors and turn off and on light switches. All of which would be a great help if your mobility is impaired.

    But they also provide more than practical help, service dogs can provide a reason for getting up in the morning and help patients become more active. Having a constant companion can ease pain, as a dog gives you focus away from the pain and they have shown to improve energy levels and sense of well being.

    Smaller breeds are also being used as service dogs, but for very different reasons their body heat.

    One sufferer with fibromyalgia was introduced to a Xoloitzcuintli or Xolo (small Mexican hairless dog) and found that within 15 minutes of the dog lying on her wrists the pain with gone. Xolos are renowed for their exceptional body heat and she went on to have one as a service dog, trained to lie around her neck and shoulders.

  • Bird & Fish 25.08.2021 Comments Off on You Should Take A Closer Look At ADHD And Fish Oil Studies.

    Literally thousands of children if not hundreds of thousands, each year are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Stimulants are the most common treatment for both children and adults with this disorder. Especially Ritalin, Adderall and Dexedrine. These stimulants are believed to work by increasing the dopamine levels in the brain.

    For most people with ADD and ADHD, stimulant medications work by boosting the concentration and focus while reducing hyperactive and impulsive behaviours. It seems that we need more ADHD and fish oil studies.

    Common side effects are irritability and mood swings. Feeling restless and jittery. Difficulty sleeping, depression and dizziness. Loss of appetite and headaches. The long term impact on the developing mind has not yet been determined. This is why some researchers are pushing ADHD and fish oil studies.

    However some researchers are worried about the long term effect on the teenage mind, saying that Ritalin could interfere with normal brain development. That is why some researchers are starting to experiment with ADHD and fish oil studies.

    It is of some concern that some children are having heart attacks when taking Ritalin medication. To be fair, they are saying that the ADD and ADHD medications are causing sudden death in children with heart problems. The American Heart Association recommends that all individuals, including children undergo a cardiac evaluation before starting a course of Ritalin type medications.

    There are some psychiatric problems associated with these medications. They say that stimulants for ADD/ADHD can trigger symptoms of hostility, aggression, depression, anxiety and paranoia. They say that people with a family history of suicide, depression or bipolar disorder are a high risk, and should be monitored when taking these drugs.

  • Bird & Fish 22.08.2021 Comments Off on Bird Watching at Fond Doux Estate

    St Lucia has well-established itself as a destination for sun and sea, but the verdant, geographically intriguing island offers so much more to the visitor. St Lucia is part of the Windward Island grouping in the Caribbean Sea which forms part of the archipelago linking North and South America. As such, it is uniquely placed in the migratory route of many birds and is home to at least five endemic species, several subspecies and many Caribbean endemics. Its relatively small size and easy navigability make the island an ideal bird watching destination.

    The town of Soufriere, an historical town nestled at the base of quickly rising slopes into the rain-forested interior of the island, has long boasted a dynamic and varied bird life. Relatively undeveloped and naturally protected, Soufriere and its environs are home to a number of fascinating bird species. It is also the easiest access route to the forested interior where many of the endemic species can be found. The St Lucian rainforests undisturbed, fertile landscape supports a diverse tropical plant life, and as a result has become something of a bird sanctuary.

    Three species of hummingbird found on the island, including the Purple Throated Carib, a dark bird with a brilliant, iridescent purple throat, the curved beaked Green Throated Carib and the tiny but distinctive Antillian Crested Hummingbird make this part of the island their home, though increasingly, with the end of commercially crop dusting, more and more of the species are being seen in the lower lying areas of the island. The remarkable endemic Amazona Versicolor, a parrot species unique to the island nation also makes its home in the rain forest; it favours the Gwi gwi berry, fruit of a prickly palm that is in abundance on this part of the island. Famously elusive, the Amazona Versicolor, or Jacquot as it is locally known, is an endemic brightly plumaged parrot that is also the islands national bird. Jacquot is more often heard than sighted, its call is unique, but has been known to reward those who are patient.

    The St Lucia Oriole, another endemic, is a particularly exciting sighting. It bears distinctive orange-yellow markings on its underside and wings which stand out against its predominantly black plumage. The ubiquitous Lesser Antillean Bullfinch is no stranger to even the most casual bird watcher. The male is black with a bright red throat, the female is dun coloured. They are often found in pairs and quite likely to approach you on your veranda, particularly if there is a bowl of fruit around.

    Because of the abundance of fruit trees, the protective mountainous terrain and rainforest canopy, bird watching in St Lucia is both an incidental affair for the arm chair birder, as well as a rewarding excursion for the dedicated enthusiast.

  • Cat & Dog 17.08.2021 Comments Off on Save Your Furniture but Don’t Declaw Your Cat

    Is your cat clawing the furnishings and climbing the draperies? Have you thought about having kitty declawed? Stop! Read about declawing and the correct choice to save your furniture and your drapes.

    One of the biggest disadvantages to owning a cat is the harm they can do to furniture and curtains. Cats really like to climb and they need to scratch. Scratching serves not only to maintain kitty’s claws in great shape, it also can serve as physical exercise for his forelegs.

    If you’ve experienced the frustration and anger of coming home to find a ruined couch or wing back chair, you have possibly been tempted to think about having your feline friend declawed. Don’t! Declawing a cat is inhumane for a variety of reasons. The thing is, unlike almost all animals, cats walk on their toes, not the soles of their feet. A cat’s claws are really connected to the last bone of its toe.

    This means that when you eliminate your small friend’s claws, you are also removing the very last bone and joint in each and every one of its toes. It would be exactly like amputating the last bone in every single one of your fingers! It can make walking challenging and it takes away his natural defense if he gets himself out of the house. There exists also possibility of nerve damage, extreme pain and infection.

    Declawed cats all too often grow to be aggressive, fearful or distant. In reality, declawing is illegal in a a number of civilized countries. But there’s great news! There’s a natural and humane strategy to save your furniture, your drapes and your sanity.

    Offer your feline buddy with a cat tree or condo. Make it tall and sturdy enough to give your small friend someplace to climb and look down on the world. Include a scratching post of sisal rope or some comparable material. Cats climb and scratch by nature. Give kitty a location to do it and you will both be happier.

  • Animals News 16.08.2021 Comments Off on Save your Precious Pets From Pesticides

    Every year, thousands of domestic pets and wild life lose their lives to the ravaging effects of pesticide poisoning. Most pet lovers also enjoy gardening and the great outdoors. Little do they know what caustic ingredients are in the pesticides that are being sprayed on lawns and green areas. We take for granted that most herbicides used by gardeners or sold in stores are safe. Many name brands such as “Weed n’ Feed” and “Round Up” contain the same deadly cancer causing ingredients that were found in Agent Orange. Another synthetic poison found in these two well known garden products is 2,4-D. It is also the active ingredient found in “Killex.” It can cause loss of reflex in humans along with comas, kidney and liver failure. In dogs it is the number one killer causing malignant lymphomas, a form of cancer.

    Sadly, just five percent of pesticides reach their target weeds and garden pest. Pesticides and chemicals target our water supplies, lakes and streams in the form of run off or just dissipate into the air and fall back to earth in the form of acid rain. Major health damage can occur when Toxic Pesticides are absorbed through our skin, swallowed or inhaled. When not applied correctly, pesticides can settle on ponds, pools, children’s toys, pets left outdoors and even drift through open windows settling on our furniture, bedding and even our floors. Our pets paws and our own shoes often are responsible for tracking deadly pesticides into our homes leaving unseen traces on our carpet.

    We all face the continuing problem of toxic by-products through years of pesticide residue that is in our food supply and everyday environment. What we don’t realize is how wide spread pesticide poisoning really is. These caustic chemicals are widely used in many of our schools and playgrounds as well as in public buildings private homes and many hospitals and hotels. Pesticide abuse is used in our agriculture and forest areas.

    Why are Pets Vulnerable to Pesticide Poisoning?

    * Pets spend most of their time close to the ground, this is where pesticide concentration is highest.

    * Pets ingest most pesticides while grooming themselves. Many pets ingest these chemicals with the natural process of cleaning their paws and fur.

    Most of our pets spend their time playing in heavily treated areas such as our front lawns or back yards.

    * Pets have higher absorption rates than human systems. Animals may be more sensitive and easily poisoned by conditions deemed safe to people.

    Signs of Pesticide Poisoning In Pets

    * Excessive drooling and foaming at the mouth.

    * Loss of thirst and appetite.

    * Vomiting or diarrhea.

    * Immune function decline.

    * Convulsions and disorientation.

    * Birds and fish die due to toxic runoff in our water supply.

    * Feline thyroid disease.

    * Dogs contract cancer (malignant lymphoma)

    What Can We Do To Stop Pesticide Poisoning?

  • Bird & Fish 16.08.2021 Comments Off on Outdoor Bird Feeders–What Food to Use

    If you are trying to encourage birds to come into your yard you, not only, need to consider their homes but, also, their diets. Different types of bird seed are suited to different species of birds and different species of birds prefer different types of bird feeders.

    Choosing the right type of bird feeder for your anticipated visitors and bird seed for the species of birds found in your area ensures that your visitors stay happy, healthy and well fed. That will keep them coming back year after year.

    Sunflower seeds are the ideal food for species such as sparrows, doves, chickadees, cardinals, blue jays and finches. Most types of hanging feeders can accommodate sunflower seeds. The only thing one must consider is that the bird feeder for the birds be hung fairly high off the ground. You should, also, consider that the feeder offer some sort of protection against squirrels, since squirrels are, also, very fond of sunflowers. Another popular seed with birds is corn. Corn attracts birds such as blackbirds, starlings and cardinals. Most large song birds and some smaller ones enjoy corn. So if you want to attract song birds, hang your bird feeder high off the ground with plenty of room around it so that the birds can congregate. Providing platforms and perches at different levels will enable several birds to feed at the same time. Wire caged feeders and mesh are ideal for corn because they keep squirrels and other unwanted visitors away from the feeding station. Another popular food for birds is suet. Suet is a type of animal fat that attracts titmice, chickadees and woodpeckers. Suet can be found in the form of bars or cakes. It should be placed in a special suet bird feeder for best results.

    It is important to keep your bird feeders clean. Old seed shells and leftover seeds should be removed from the bird feeder periodically. Spilled seed tends to attract rodents. Make sure that the bird feeder gets washed with a soap solution or bleach and water on a regular basis in order to avoid mold and mildew. Taking care of your bird feeder and providing the proper food will insure a happy experience for your bird visitors and you.
