• Bird & Fish 31.12.2021 Comments Off on A Solar Bird Bath Can Add Interest To Your Backyard

Attracting a large variety of wild bird species to your yard is easy and cost effective with a solar bird bath, and this beautiful garden focal point won’t increase your utility bills. Its true that birds flock to open water and bird baths that harness solar energy have many advantages over electrical or traditional baths which include being easier to place than electrical ones and also having the additional benefit for your electric bill.

A bird bath is enjoyed by both you and your backyard birds, but did you know that without a source of open water like this the birds might not survive? Wintertime is hard on birds because of the limited amount of open water available to them, so the heated, solar powered bird bath can be very important to their well-being. Water will be available to the birds during the coldest months when you use a solar bird bath with a heating element.

These types of bird baths need no electricity since they receive their energy from the sun via a small solar panel. Mold and bacteria growth can be inhibited with the circulating water feature that is commonly offered. You’ll find the panel in the bowl part of the bird bath and the pump in the base or pedestal.

Solar power offers advantages over electrical power for location placement and installation ease of your bird bath. Solar powered models offer greater flexibility for placement, since no electrical cord is needed to power them. An additional benefit is its ease of moving around to different locations. This is important since you may need to move it a few times before you find a location in plain view that can also afford some protection from natural bird predators. Bird baths with the running water feature will discourage bacterial and mold growth, as well as provide other benefits over baths with still water. One big problem with the stagnant water in a traditional bird bath is that it can breed more unwanted mosquitoes. But a bath with running water will attract more birds, as well as discourage annoying mosquitoes.

Although minimal, solar bird baths do still require some maintenance. It does need to be cleaned, but you’ll find it won’t need as much work if it has running water. Algae growth can be inhibited with diligent scrubbing and the use of products with natural enzymes. You might have to remove your solar panels in the winter, and replace them periodically.

So, you see, a solar powered bird bath can be a great investment for your yard. If you keep your part of the bargain by maintaining your bird bath, then the birds will provide you with entertainment all year long.

  • Zoo Land 31.12.2021 Comments Off on Bolivia Volunteers – Santa Cruz Zoo Project

Commenting on the introduction of the Santa Cruz Zoo Volunteer project, Willson Marshal, Bolivia Volunteers Administrator says,

This is a very exciting time for us here at Bolivia Volunteers, and in the short time since we introduced the project at the Zoologico Municipal Fauna Sudamericana we have been amazed by the number of inquiries and offers of assistance we have received.

Of course we have offered projects caring for neglected and abandoned domestic animals in several cities across Bolivia for many years, but the prospect of being able to spend time at the Santa Cruz Zoo with our indigenous wildlife puma, llama, carpincho, tapir, pink dolphins, flamingo, condor and many more has really fired the imagination of our volunteers.

And Pascal Deneuve from Creuzier-le-vieux, France – currently at the Zoo on a two month volunteer placement adds.

Ive always been an animal lover, but of course thats really only for dogs and cats back home but here at the Santa Cruz Zoo Ive had real hands-on experience of caring for much larger and exotic animals.

At the moment Im working on upgrading the bird enclosures, doing some building and painting. The next assignment lined up for me look at is planning a diet regime for the big cats. This place is just SO special, nothing like the zoos back home and really does need all the help it can get.

In a recent global survey of several thousand volunteer travelers, over 75% chose South America as their preferred continent and of those, 65% commented that BOLIVIA the poorest South American country would be their first choice destination.

It is 10 years since the International Year of Volunteers in 2001 and through a UN General Assembly Resolution, this anniversary is being marked across the globe, with volunteering organizations world-wide promoting the values of volunteering, recognizing the value of volunteering, building and reinforcing volunteering networks, and helping individuals to realize their potential to make a real difference by sharing their time, skills and experience for the benefit of others.

The declaration of IYV+10, under the banner “Volunteer! Make a Difference”, is an acknowledgement of the important role of the volunteer sector, and aims to –

    Build respect, trust, understanding and solidarity through volunteering;

    Raise volunteerism on the development agenda;

    Build partnerships; and

    Define and empower global volunteering.

  • Bird & Fish 30.12.2021 Comments Off on Gallon Fish Tank Choosing The Type Of Fish, Water And Filtration Options

The 100 gallon fish tank is the ideal canvas for letting the imagination run wild and filling it with different kinds of fish as well as various decorations will give you plenty of space to fill and enjoy. The 100 gallon fish tank is large enough to accommodate more fish and, though costing a bit more than other lesser capacity fish tanks, is spacious enough for most needs. Of course, filling the 100 gallon fish tank requires giving thought as to what is should contain but that is a matter of personal choice and not constrains, since there is more than enough space to include most of what is desired.

One needs to consider whether the 100 gallon fish tank will hold freshwater or saltwater and this should be on top of the wish list when constructing the fish tank. Freshwater fish tanks do not cost as much nor do they require much time to fill, while saltwater fish tanks need more time and attention in terms of deciding the pH as well as other chemical balances. These factors need to be considered when deciding whether to make the 100 gallon fish tank into a freshwater or saltwater one.

Deciding on whether to have freshwater or saltwater in the fish tank will help govern which kind of fish that the 100 gallon fish tank will contain. Using freshwater in the fish tank will necessitate having fish such as catfish and oscars while saltwater fish tanks may require having a variety of puffer fish, lion fish, moray eels as well as sea horses. So, the kind of fish to put in the tank are greatly dependent on the type of water and for more information regarding the kind of fish suitable for different waters it would be advisable to consult the local pet store to find which species of fish complements which type of water.

Along with choosing between freshwater or saltwater in the 100 gallon fish tank, one needs to consider the types of accessories that the fish tank will contain. Is the fish tank going to hold artificial or real life plant and what would be the best decorations that would suit the species of fish that the 100 gallon fish tank will contain? Added to this, is the necessity to consider the type of filtration options and combinations to keep the fish tank operational and these would include mechanical, chemical and biological combinations.

  • Zoo Land 28.12.2021 Comments Off on What You Need To Know About The Los Angeles Zoo

The Los Angeles Zoo is one of the newest in the country, having been moved to its present location in Griffith Park only in 1966– but it is also one of the best. Over 1,100 animals live caged within its 113 acres. And before its move, it was located about two miles to the south, where it had opened in 1912.

Since 1998, the Los Angeles Zoo has opened a number of exhibits, each of them expertly engineered to resemble the natural environment in which its creatures live. The first of these was Chimpanzees of the Mahale Mountains, whose setting is designed to resemble that of the Mahale range, on the Tanzania- Congo (Kinshasa) border. Here the chimps sleep in heated bedrooms! Jane Goodall has called the exhibit “one of the finest zoo habitats.” Other exhibits include Campo Gorilla Reserve, where seven gorillas live amidst lush tropical vegetation; Elephants of Asia, whose animals inhabit a barn modeled on Thai architecture; Sea Life Cliffs, which houses harbor seals (this was originally called Sea Lions Cliffs); Red Ape Rain Forest, where orangutans are skeptical of changes in their cages; Dragons of Komodo, featuring the large carnivorous lizard of Indonesia; Winnick Family Children’s Zoo, where visitors can explore a cave or walk down a desert trail; and Unique Animals, which has at various times displayed the Chicoan peccary, the Sumutran tiger, and the snow leopard. Future exhibits are also being planned.

Activities are held for children. One is a play space called California Condor Rescue, where visitors can learn about saving this species.

One of the zoo’s most unusual sights is the rare mountain (or woolly) tapir the only member of its taxon that lives wild outside the tropical forests, being instead a denizen of the mountains of Colombia and Ecuador. (The tapir is related to the horse and rhinoceros, though it looks more like a hog. There are also the Malayan tapir and two other South American species Baird’s tapir, found from Mexico south to far western Colombia, and the Brazilian tapir, plus a few prehistoric species that have since gone extinct.) This creature is not found in most other zoos; there are only a few hundred alive in the wild today, and many experts feel that the gene pool of captive specimens is not enough to save the species from extinction.

The activities and exhibits described above are only a few of the zoo’s many, and there is not room enough to describe them all. But they should give a good idea of what the zoo is like.

  • Bird & Fish 24.12.2021 Comments Off on Go Bird Watching In Spain Nothing can be more colorful

Spain is an astonishingly rich nation when it comes to exhibiting wildlife. Spain is considered to have implausible variety of indigenous species because of its diverse climate and terrain within its precincts. This is a good enough reason that accounts for the variety of birds that can spotted in Spain. Spain is a suitable dwelling for about 20 different species of birds and many of these species fall in the category of highly prized and rare. A significant section of these species of birds indigenous and others indulge in migrating to and from Spain on season basis.

Bird watching enthusiasts particularly love to watch Griffin vultures, Golden Eagle and Egyptian vultures in Spain. There are more then 400 Black vultures that may interest bird watching fans. In fact, Black vulture in considered the biggest bird of prey indigenous to Europe. Those who are really interested in finding a spot one can exclusively watch a number of Black vultures are advised to visit Andalucia’s national Park situated in southern Spain or go to Sierra Palada.

If it is a specific variety of bird that you want to watch in Spain then it is important that you plan your vacation as well in advance. This is because many species of birds are migratory and can be seen in Spain only for specific period of time. One such example is White Stork which is a migratory bird which is very rarely seen in rest of the Europe but can be easily found in Spain. White Stork migrates from somewhere in Africa to Spain and can be seen between the month of January and February. Most of the time Bird watchers get to see these birds easily as they generally make their nests in cities and their nests are quite easy to locate.

Another indigenous species of migratory bird is Flamingo that arrives in thousands of numbers in Spain during the summer and spring season. Spain also provides an ample opportunity to watch some wet land birds such as cranes and ducks. Best ways to watch wetland birds are the costal wetland areas and Ebro Delta. National Park of Donana also has a large number of wetland Bird species. Golden oriole is another species that can be exclusively found in Andalucas orchards and wood lands. Golden oriole can be particularly seen during the summer season and is known for their dazzling bright and yellow body. The black, orange and white hoopoe is another striking species that can be seen in golf courses and opened wood lands.

  • Bird & Fish 24.12.2021 Comments Off on Window Mounted Bird Feeder 3 Advantages Over Traditional Feeding Station

If you’ve been considering a new window mounted bird feeder for your home, you’re in good company. As a naturalist and bird watcher of many years, I enjoy using these feeders and would like to share three to advantages of using them over traditional feeding stations.

The first big advantage of this window mount feeder is that it will prevent squirrels, raccoons and other pesky varmints from getting into your bird feeder, eating all the seed or possibly destroying it with their weight.

Since these feeding stations are mounted directly to the window, you can determine the height of the feeder from the ground and its proximity to trees (branches can give animals access to the feeder.) The trick is to place the bird house high enough that raccoons and squirrels cannot reach it and far enough from trees so they cannot get to it from a tree branch.

The next big advantage of having a window mounted bird feeder is that they are easy to remove and clean. Feeders need to be cleaned every few weeks or so because otherwise, they can serve as a transmission point for disease. The purpose of a feeder it to allow you to birdwatch and to take care of the birds, so the last thing you want is to have a soiled bird feeder or one that is full of moldy seed.

Since these feeders are generally made from acrylic, they do not stain and are easy to clean by soaking in a sink of hot water with dish soap and a little bit of bleach to sanitize the feeder. Make sure to rinse the feeder thoroughly so there is no residue, then dry completely and reattach to the window. Never put an acrylic feeder in the dishwasher.

The third advantage of using a window mount bird feeder is that you can enjoy bird watching from inside your house. This makes for a great activity for parents and children, people who are infirm, those who work for home or anyone who enjoys bringing a view of nature indoors.

Since the feeders are generally made from acrylic, you can see right through them. This means you can enjoy the birds, watch them play and fight and even see them splitting open seeds. Since these feeding stations are small, they attract smaller, more colorful varieties like finches and keep away the bigger birds that can be aggressive and annoying.

Installing a feeder on your window is a great way to take care of the birds in the winter time when food is scarce. It’s also a fun way to watch the birds all year long, no matter what the weather.

  • Cat & Dog 22.12.2021 Comments Off on Egyptian Mau – The facts every owner of this cat breed should know

A breed of cat as old as recorded history, the Egyptian Mau (‘Mau’ means ‘cat’ in Egyptian) can be seen in the artwork of the ancient Egyptians. It is thought that Egyptian Maus are descended from species of the African Wild Cat. In that culture, the cats were worshiped, protected by laws and mummified. The Egyptian Mau is the only breed of cat that has naturally occurring spots on its short coat. Found in a random pattern on the fur, these spots can also be found on the skin. The coat can be silver, bronze or smoke colored with variations occurring between these three colors.

Egyptian Maus have striking green eyes and an unusual flap of skin extending from the flank to the back knee, which allows for agility. It is the fastest breed of cat, able to reach speeds of more than thirty miles per hour. Average adult male Egyptian Maus will reach weights between ten to fourteen pounds. Females will average six to ten pounds.

Egyptian Maus are described as talkative almost musical and have very distinct vocalizations. They are curious cats and like to explore, but they can also be lap cats, preferring the relative comfort and safety of a warm and friendly lap. Egyptian Maus are very friendly with their families and enjoy their company immensely, but are wary of strangers. They are also known to wag their tails like a dog when happy.

Egyptian Maus have some important differences from other domesticated cats. They are more sensitive to temperatures and prefer very warms climates. Egyptian Maus are also more sensitive to medicines and anesthesia. They have a longer than average gestational period. The normal period for cats is sixty-nine days but seventy-three days is still considered normal for an Egyptian Mau. This breed is also prone to food allergies, hot spots, cardiomyopothy and feline asthma. There is a website that has great information on Egyptian Mau and most other breeds of cats. It has details that pertain to a cat breeds health, grooming, living conditions, best food choices and more, the website is called: Dog And Cat Facts, and can be found at this url:

  • Animals News 20.12.2021 Comments Off on Pets In The Classroom Grant Program Sets Goal Of Reaching 5 Million Children

With more than 500,000 elementary and middle school students having already been given the opportunity to interact with pets on a daily basis in their classroom, the Pet Care Trust board has announced a new goal for its Pets in the Classroom Grant Program: Within the next five years, Pets in the Classroom will introduce 5 million children in 100,000 classrooms to pets and the benefits they provide.

The new goal for this teacher grant program comes after the much quicker-than-anticipated growth of the program in the last couple of years:

The Trust Board set a long-term goal of reaching 1 million kids by providing 30,000 Pets in the Classroom grants, said Pet Care Trust executive director Steve King. We have reached the half-way point to this goal far sooner than any of us thought possible. It really is a remarkable achievement thanks to the Boards foresight and the support of so many pet retailers and suppliers.

While the growth of the program began slowly, providing 3,200 grants in the 2010-2011 school year, the addition of Pets in the Classroom grants through Petsmart and Petco, along with rebate grants supported by independent pet stores, resulted in an increase to over 6,000 grants for the 2011-12 school year. Also, in the beginning of 2012, the program expanded to include 7th and 8th grade classrooms, while in previous years the grants had only been available to pre-k – 6th grade teachers. This expansion to include middle school classrooms increased the number of students impacted by the grants, making the overall average of students impacted over 50 students per classroom. Then, in preparation for the 2012-13 school year, the Trust added additional programs through Pet Supermarket and Carolina Biological Supply. The response from teachers in the first two months of this new school year has been overwhelming. More than 6,800 grants have been issued since August 1, bringing the total to 15,500 grants since the programs inception.

The Pets in the Classroom program benefits students by teaching them responsible, long-term pet care at an early age and providing the psychological and developmental benefits associated with the human-animal bond. Studies have shown that caring for pets has a positive effect on children, improving school attendance and teaching children responsibility, as well as encouraging nurturing and building self esteem. To learn more about the benefits of classroom pets as well as more about the Pets in the Classroom grant program, visit www.petsintheclassroom.org.

  • Animals News 19.12.2021 Comments Off on Newbie’s Guide to Choosing Iguana Pets

Iguanas are one of the most common exotic pets. If you’re considering getting one of these lizards, you should know a few things beforehand. Here are a few things you need to consider when buying iguana pets.

Once you’ve made the decision to buy an ig, you should start looking for an enclosure. It’s best to have the enclosure setup before you bring him home. This will give you a chance to make sure the humidity and heat is adjusted well enough. This is especially important when getting a younger ig.

After you’ve got the enclosure, you need to decide where you want to get your iguana from. You’ll have to choose between a pet store and adoption from a rescue shelter. You should know that pet stores generally don’t give iguana pets the best care.

The igs are usually very stressed, and the employees may even give you invalid information about their proper care. If you want the best chance of getting a healthy pet, you should consider adoption. The rescuers generally take very good care of iguana pets.

Once you’ve decided where you want to get your ig from, you’re ready to pick one out. You should make sure you check the iguana out thoroughly before you take him home. If you’re buying a younger iguana, it’s important that he’s very energetic. An immature iguana that rarely moves around is in all likelihood sick. Older ones are usually less active, but can still be healthy.

It’s also a good idea to check for parasites. Mites are some of the most common parasites. You can check for an infestation by looking closely at the iguana’s scales. Mites will appear as small specks that are moving around.

Another common problem with iguana pets is dry gangrene. This condition causes symptoms such as blackened tail tips and toes. However, some iguanas naturally have black patterns, so you shouldn’t get this confused with dry gangrene.

White tigers are born when both tiger and tigress that mate carry the unusual gene for white coloring. Nevertheless the double recessive allele in the genomic code only turns up naturally about once in every 10,000 births. The reason is yet to be unidentified but white tigers appear only amid Bengal species.

Tigers are generally night hunters. They can easily take down large animals. They hunt deer, wild pigs and cattle. The usual tigers are orange in color with black stripes. But according to species, the color intensity and the marking patterns can differ.

There were eight tiger subspecies at one time. But ever since the 1950s three of these species have gone nonexistence. The remaining five species are endangered. Apart from loss of habitation poaching too is a reason for tigers to go extinct. Read more Glaspiber
